Signs That Indicate the Need for Assisted Living

March 26th, 2011

An assisted living facility is a place that is aimed to help people to become as independent as they can capably be. While no one likes to admit that they may need help to do routine tasks, there are times when the help is truly necessary. Here are some signs that indicate if you would need the services.

First of all, do you think you need more help than what your family and friends are able to help you with? For example, you may find preparing meals, cleaning the house, or washing clothes too stressful, and your family and friends are off to work or only able to help you when the day is over. In such instances, assisted living can ease some of that stress, as in assisted living centres, a home-like environment is created, except that you will not need to cook or clean, and can get help with things you may experience difficulty with. Furthermore, if you are cut from a social life staying alone, the tendency for you to fall into depression would increase.

These centres have many other people who are there so they may socialize, allowing them with the opportunity to enjoy recreational activities together or make new friends instead of staying cooped up at home alone. Apart from that, if you have difficulty moving around, the dangers of living alone is there. You may fall down and have problems getting up, or have difficulty getting up of bed to begin with. The good thing about assisted living centres is that there are always people around to watch your back, and help you when you need help. Plus, if you need to get around anywhere, these centres offer transportation as well, so you do not need to rely on your family or friends.

If you are looking out for your parents instead, understand that people tend to be denial their transition from independence to dependency. If that is the situation, you may check on them to see if they might need assisted living. Of course, assisted living costs can be very expensive, so your parents may think that they are better off relying on themselves. Hence, state obvious observations that they do need help, such as a refrigerator filled with spoiled food, they have frequent bruises, they keep wearing the same clothes, the place is less tidy than it used to be, they forget important things like medication or doctor’s appointments, or them exhibiting confusion in the day. It is better investing on assisted living costs than accidents. Of course, you will need to break it to them caringly and understandingly; because no one likes to find out they are losing their ability to function on their own. And if you acquire such services, make sure you visit them often to reassure them that you still care and remember them.
