Realtors - How to Create a Successful Real Estate Postcard

Real estate postcards have been used by realtors for years to generate new business. Created correctly, these mailings can be a highly effective marketing tool. However many agent waste thousands of dollars every year creating poorly designed postcards. This article will give you the basic rules you should follow for every single real estate postcard you send out.

What You’ve Done:

Always remember that the general public is highly skeptical of any mailing they receive. As they sort through their mail, you have about 1 second to grab their attention. For a real estate postcard, this should be a short, one sentence exclamation of your accomplishment. Here are some examples:

  • Just Listed!
  • Just Sold!
  • Under Contract Guaranteed!
  • -See Why Your Neighbor Used Me!

All of these headlines encapsulate your achievements and why the potential client should pay attention. If you just listed or sold a neighbor’s house, the recipient will continue to read your postcard.

Make sure that you highlight any special achievements you’ve had in their local area that are relevant to them. Sellers rarely care if you have the latest certifications but will take notice if you just sold a house down the street in 2 weeks.

Free Offer:

The public loves free information. On a real estate postcard you can offer all sorts of free information. Let your potential clients know that if they contact you, you can provide them:

  • Free List of Sold Homes in their area
  • Free Market Statistics for their neighborhood
  • Free value evaluation of their home

Many times sellers aren’t looking to sell now, but will be in 6 months. Getting them to contact you now is critical. Having their contact information is key. Send them market updates every month. Check in with them regularly. Many times real estate postcards don’t produce instant income, but the contacts they create can be priceless in the future.

Call To Action:

A “Call To Action” segment of a real estate postcard is the most important element and the most often overlooked. Many agents assume that a potential client will call them if they’re interested. A call to action can increase your return rate on your mailings by 100% - 200%.

Never forget to include at least one call to action on each side of your postcard!

Save Money on Real Estate Postcards:

If you’re going to be successful in any direct mailing campaign, you need to be consistent. That means mailing to the same household every month for at least a year. This can be expensive. Here are a few tricks we’ve found to save money on real estate postcards:

  • Use coupon sites. There are websites available that provide daily deals and discount codes for online postcard printers.
  • Use Standard / Bulk Postage. Make sure that whatever printer or mailing company you use offers a bulk rate postage option. This can save you over 20 cents per piece.
  • Use Color on Only One Side. Most online printers can print color on the front and black and white on the back. The savings can be substantial.

If you use these guidelines every time you send out a mailing, you’ll see your rate of return increase dramatically.
