The Benefits of a Townhome

March 15th, 2010

Buying a home is likely to be the most expensive investment of your life. However, when you own land and the home on it, you become part of the American dream. Many early settlers of the United States came from hundreds of other countries with the hope of owning some land, a home, and piece of that dream. However, because becoming a homeowner can be expensive, many people choose to start building equity on a smaller scale, in a condo or a townhome. A townhome can be a great alternative to purchasing an expensive single family home. But what exactly is a townhome?

A townhome is different from a single-family home and a condo in several ways. A townhome is an attached privately owned dwelling that is part of or adjacent to other similar units. This usually means that townhomes are side by side with other townhomes and share walls with the other units. In most cases, a townhome would be more like a single-family home than a condo in that the owner owns not only the unit itself, but the land underneath the townhome.

Any upkeep or maintenance of commons areas shared by those who live in the townhome community would be taken care of by a homeowners association to which the owner of the townhome would pay a monthly fee. A homeowners association is an organization created by the developer of the townhome community to create regulations that retain the quality of life for everyone in the community. If you are thinking of becoming a homeowner, a townhome can be a great place to start.
